Satdobato Youth Club edged Jawalakhel Youth Club 4-2 on penalties to enter into the quarter-final of the fifth Jhapa Gold Cup Football Tournament that kicked off on Saturday at the Domalal Stadium in Birtabajar, Jhapa.
Goalie Abhishek Baral put up a sensational performance in the shootout denying two shots from the spot after the regulation period finished in a 2-2 draw. The winners were then decided directly through spotkicks without prolonging the match into extra time.
Satdobato will meet APF FC, drawn directly into the last eight, in the quarter-final scheduled for Monday.
Earlier, Satdobato took an early lead in the Lalitpur derby after their Nigerian forward Ajayi Martins scored in the third minute. But Cameroonian Onguna Junior struck twice for Jawalakhel in quick succession. The forward restored parity in the 12th minute before giving them a 2-1 cushion in the 34th.
Aashish Rai brought the game on level terms three minutes into the restart before the regulation 90-minute period finished at 2-2.
In the shootout, Satdobato’s Aakash Budha Magar, Prashant Awasthi, Man Bahadur Tamang and Ajayi Martins converted all four shots in a row. Jawalakhel's first two penalty takers Junior and Nepali international Suraj Jeu Thakuri scored first two goals from the spot before captain Kuldip Karki and Gaurav Shrestha were both denied by custodian Baral. The shot stopper was declared man-of-the-match and awarded a purse of Rs9,999.
Nepal Police Club will vie against Sankata Club on Sunday in the annual football tournament organised after a two-year hiatus owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
