Sompal Kami struck an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls to guide Karnali Yaks to a four-wicket victory over Biratnagar Kings in the sixth match of the Nepal Premier League at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Thursday.
Chasing 187 for victory, Karnali reached 187 for six in 19.5 overs, recovering from a precarious position at 57 for five to secure their target with one ball remaining.
Captain Sompal led the late charge alongside Gulsan Jha, who remained unbeaten on 28 off 21 deliveries. The pair added an unbroken 64-run partnership for the seventh wicket to turn the match around.
Sompal struck four fours and three sixes, scoring at a strike rate of 193.75. Jha contributed two fours and two sixes as Karnali collected 62 runs without losing a wicket in the final five overs.
Karnali’s chase had begun aggressively, with Ariful Islam smashing 32 off just 12 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Deepak Dumre added 20 off 11 deliveries, but both fell to Angelo Mathews, who finished with three wickets for 25 runs.
Hussain Talat was dismissed for a duck, while Pawan Sarraf made 36 off 28 balls before Pratis GC removed him. Akbar Ali also fell cheaply, leaving Karnali in trouble before Sompal and Jha rescued the innings.
Earlier, Biratnagar posted 186 for seven after being asked to bat first. Lokesh Bam top-scored with an explosive 87 off 52 balls, hitting three fours and nine sixes.
Angelo Mathews contributed 31 off 23 deliveries, while Andre Russell added 27 off 15 balls to strengthen Biratnagar’s total. Basir Ahamad chipped in with 13 off seven balls.
Sompal was Karnali’s standout bowler as well, claiming four wickets for 33 runs in his four overs. Mark Watt took one wicket while conceding 23 runs.
The victory gave Karnali a successful chase against a Biratnagar side that had looked well placed to defend its total after reducing the Yaks to five wickets down inside seven overs.
