A marriage proposal on stage
The Nepali adaptation of A Marriage Proposal, a one-act farce written by Anton Chekov, is currently on stage at Mandala Theatre, Anamnagar. A Marriage Proposal is one of Chekov’s best know plays and was first performed in 1890. “Despite the fictionalisation of the characters, the adaptation shows how the forces of society hollows a person from the inside-out,” reads a press note released by Mandala Theatre. The play depicts various social, economic and political upheavals and its unwarranted consequences.
Bijaya Karki, Sharawan Rana Magar, and Shujan Oli are the actors performing on stage, while the play has been directed by Ashish and Sangeet. The producers of the play have said that the proceedings from the play will go towards building a computer lab at Shree Chepang Nimna Madhyamik Vidhyalaya in Gajuri, Dhadhing.
The play is being staged in collaboration with Youth for Digital Inclusion, an organisation that hopes to bring access of technology to rural corners of Nepal.
The play will run till March 12. There will be an additional matinee at 1 pm on Sunday and Monday.
