Named after—but not based on—the legendary playwright Bal Krishna Sama, the film tells the story of an adolescent boy who is mired by the practice of caste-based discrimination still prevalent in rural reaches of the country.
Despite the formulation of laws prohibiting caste-based discrimination, the film clarifies that some traces of discrimination still exist in the country, especially in rural districts, in a new and more subtle way.
The film follows the boy who, after a particularly painful episode, flees his hometown, in search of a new life and identity, to India, leaving his family and friends behind.
Speaking about the upcoming screening, Ashmina Ranjit, director at Nexus Culture Centre, said, “The screening comes at a time when the voices of the marginalised need to be raised, more so than ever. This particular film is exemplary, in that it subtly raises an important, but often overlooked issue, which has been engulfing the nation since ages.”
The film, director Palpalee’s debut feature, is written and edited by Palpalee himself.
The film has previously been screened at Toronto International Film Festival, 2014, Kimff, 2013, and Documentary Arts Asia Centre (DAA), Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2013, winning numerous awards along the way.
