The sudden shut down of the popular restaurant Nanglo Cafe and Pub in Durbar Marg last December, after 38 years of excellent service, dejected the hearts of many Kathmanduites who had grown up eating momos on its iconic rooftop. After a four-month hiatus, Nanglo Cafe and Pub is back on its feet, a little way down the road in Kamaladi from its former location. The new outlet is spread across four floors in a recently renovated traditional building that has preserved its timeless authentic design. Each floor is divided into smaller rooms that serve to different interests and create a different atmosphere altogether. The ground floor contains the bakery section that is immediately accessible upon entering, a lounge area with low lighting and comfortable seating, and a mini outdoor area that resembles a traditional courtyard. The first floor that is accessible through a traditional wooden staircase contains a pizza parlour that is sure to attract the younger crowd that delights in fast food, and a recreation of the iconic balcony with outdoor seating characteristic to the original Durbar Marg outlet. The upper floors are further divided into smaller albeit spacious subdivisions with regular seating for the purpose of creating a cosy atmosphere that allows for intimacy and privacy.

Commenting on the layout of the restaurant that enables such pleasant ambience, Managing Director Taijash Kakshapati shares, “Nanglo has always been about comfort and affordability. So we wanted our customers to feel welcome and comfortable with a homey, familiar kind of feel that is often associated with Nanglo.” Kakshapati further reveals that the mastermind behind the minimalistic decor and remodelling of the layout is his sister, Palistha Kakshapati, and jokes that his real work as Managing Director hasn’t even begun yet. Nevertheless, he is hopeful that the new outlet will attract Nanglo’s loyal customer base and new customers alike, and maintain its status as Kathmandu’s iconic landmark for dining that Nanglo has dedicatedly preserved since the 1970s.
