A teacher of mind and body
Sujita Gurung is a well-known name in the media world.
What are your interests apart from your work?
I am very enthusiastic about my fitness and love to work out. Apart from that, whenever I get some time out of my busy schedule, I like to check out new cafes in town and enjoy some ‘me’ time. I’m also a huge fan of movies and I’m in for any genre, as long as it is not horror.
Are you much of a reader?
Yes, I love reading. Nothing beats ending the day by snuggling under the covers and reading my book of the moment. I like to read all kinds of books and there are many favourites. So, it would be really difficult to list out just a few names.
Are you a foodie? What would be your last meal on earth?
I am a big foodie. I like trying out new dishes and I also keep on experimenting with my cooking every now and then. I do not regard myself as a competent cook yet, so I cook for myself most of the time. As for my last meal, it would definitely be my mum’s kheer and sel-roti.
Are you pretty conscious about fashion and brands?
My preference of brands depends on what I want to buy. I don’t go for brands while buying my clothes. For me, being comfortable and looking good are what matter the most, regardless of the brand. When it comes to make-up, I go for those make-up essentials that work for my skin. But when it comes to perfume, I’m brand conscious. I really like the fragrances by Chanel and Hugo Boss. Similarly, when it comes to sports attires, I prefer Adidas over the rest.
Is there anything you bought recently and you are really fond of?
That’s got to be my 1TB hard drive! (Laughs). It is filled with things like dramas, movies and so on. I can’t wait to fritter away my time on it this holiday.
Do you look up to anyone as a source of inspiration?
My mum definitely. I admire her a lot. The way she has balanced being both traditional and modern at the same time is so inspiring. She has let her children do what they want to, but has also taught us to stay grounded and respect our social mores. Also, my mother is the one that I know I can always depend on when it comes to fashion, as she has a great eye for it. Outside my family, the other person I admire a lot is Beyonce.
Any memorable incident that you’d like to share with us?
I recently went to Pokhara with my dad, brother and husband. It was a fun-filled trip. Being quite an adrenaline junkie, I took part in some adventurous sports while in Pokhara. I did paragliding and paddle boarding and enjoyed both of them thoroughly. It was also nice to bond with my dad after a long time and listen to his ‘down the memory lane’ stories.
What is your biggest nightmare?
I am scared of losing my loved ones as I’m so attached to them. But of course such things are inevitable. So I would say I m really scared of losing my memory and starting afresh.
Is there anything you want to change about yourself?
I have a tendency to hold grudges and I am working hard to change that. I wish I could be more forgiving.
If not in this field, what would you be doing?
As I am a student of psychology, my ultimate goal is to pursue my further studies in that field. So if I had not been a zumba instructor, I would be involved in psychological counseling.
Finally, what are your plans for Dashain?
I think I deserve a good break this festive season (laughs). I don’t really have big plans, but I’m thinking of spending some quality time with my family and friends. I also want to catch up on some television series and a few books. I am also looking forward to some weekend getaways with my family.
