Vulture Eye Productions, a newly formed independent collective of young theatre artists, is staging its debut production, ‘Sudhakar’s New Moon’, at Sadhana Theatre. The play will run until September 6.
‘Sudhakar’s New Moon’ is written in the genre of magical realism, examining how people’s emotions, thoughts, and personal identity are shaped, and somehow bent, by the circumstances around them. Written and directed by Mukti, the play’s original story was conceived by Sagar Dahal, who also plays the title role of Sudhakar.
Mukti says the play was born out of a recurring disillusionment with political change in Nepal. “After every political upheaval the country goes through, hope sprouts among the people once again,” he says. “Different groups arrive saying, ‘Now we are the ones who will build this nation.’ We too begin to believe that something will finally change.”
He adds that the play’s central question is whether the latest wave of power is any different from what came before. “The question of whether this newest force is simply the old one wearing a new face is what inspired me to write this play.”
Beyond this, the play also explores themes of an individual’s intricate greed and morality.
