Devotees thronged to the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu to observe the first Monday of Shrawan Sombar.
During the festival, Hindu women visit temples and offer prayers to Lord Shiva, wishing for the good fortune, prosperity and longevity of their loved ones.
Monday, or Sombar, is considered the best day for worshipping the deity.
Unmarried women looking for an ideal husband also fast on this day and put on henna (mehendi) or green bangles on their hands.
According to Hindu belief, this month is also known as the month of festivals and is considered auspicious as it marks the beginning of Hindu festivals including Teej, Dashain and Tihar.
