The government has decided to operate vehicles according to the odd and even number plate system during the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit to be held in Kathmandu on August 30 and 31.

A ministerial level meeting held on Friday made the decision to this effect.

According to Metropolitan Traffic Police Division Chief Basanta Panta, this system will come into effect from August 29 to August 31.

He said that odd number plate vehicles will be allowed to ply the road on August 29 and 31 while even number plate vehicles will be allowed to ply the road on August 30.

The government has decided to bring in this policy to facilitate the movement of guests taking part in the summit.

“Valley denizens have to face notorious traffic snarl in the morning and evening specially due to school buses,” Panta said, adding, “We are holding discussions whether to prohibit school buses to ply the road during the summit.”
