Doctors attending Dr Govinda KC have warned that the orthopaedic surgeon might develop life threatening condition and might require emergency medical interventions. Dr KC has been staging fast-unto-death protest for the last 11 days.
Dr KC began the 11th round of hunger strike since July 24, demanding that Parliament should immediately endorse the Health Profession Education Bill.
With his heart beats constantly fluctuating, Dr KC has been put on drips and supplemental oxygen.
“For many days, he has been complaining of headaches, muscle cramps and dizziness. He is too frail,” said Dr Dibya Singh, a member of the health committee, monitoring the fasting surgeon’s health condition.
The repeated hunger strikes have already weakened his body, Dr Singh said, he might need emergency medical intervention anytime.
A health bulletin issued by the medical team on Thursday suggests Dr KC’s blood pressure, electrolytes, blood counts and oxygen saturation are in lower range. “He might develop life threatening complications at any point of time requiring emergency medical intervention,” it reads.
As a back-up, many health equipment including monitors and ventilators have been kept on standby in the room where Dr KC is put up.
Nurses, medical officers and resident doctors are constantly monitoring his condition, with senior consultants doing rounds every day.
Apart from the HPE Bill, Dr KC has been demanding mandatory enrolment of meritorious students in private medical colleges which have been admitting students with poor results, charging exorbitant fees.
He has also urged the government to give the Institute of Medicine the authority to enrol students, set fees and grant affiliation and de-affiliate medical colleges that fail to abide by the directives issued by the government and the court.
