The arrestees have been identified as Manish Kumar Yadav, 29, of Siraha; Shekhar Panjiyar, 25, of Saptari; Krishna Kumar Jha, 27, of Sarlahi; Pushpa Raj Sharma, 28, of Dhanusha and Santosh Lama, 29, of Boudha.
Lama had worked at different companies as a civil engineer while Panjiyar was found to be working at Subisu, an internet service provider, on contract basis.
All the arrestees “had gone to” Nepal Engineering College (NEC) but had “bought” fake certificates after they failed in the exam.
Yadav and Panjiyar had enrolled in NEC in 2007, Jha and Sharma in 2010 and Lama had enrolled in 2006.
The fake certificates were prepared by a designing firm run by Ankit Khadka, 29, a computer designer, who was arrested on Wednesday along with Suvit Khadka, 44, who was identified as a broker and three other fake engineers. According to the MPCD, Ankit and Suvit are part of a racket that “produces and sells” fake engineering degrees. They own a designing firm in Gabahal, Lalitpur, from where they run the illegal business, said police.
Ankit used to “design” fake certificates while Suvit would help the so-called engineers get registered with the Nepal Engineering Council.
Police said the arrested persons had bought certificates for Rs 400,000– Rs 500,000.
