ICRC Nepal chief Dragana Kojic Dean and Prof Dr Rakesh Shrivastav of TU’s Institute of Medicine inaugurated the cold room at the Maharajgunj-based hospital.
The newly built cold room with the capacity to keep 200 bodies is intended to be used by the department, allowing it to increase the storage capacity of human remains.
“The recent earthquake evidenced the need to increase the existing capacities of forensic facilities in Nepal in managing human remains,” Kojic said. “By ensuring dignified management of human remains, we show respect for the deceased, their families and communities.”
The construction of the cold room was funded by the Japanese government. Apart from providing the cold room, ICRC has also trained local forensic experts on forensic anthropology and forensic pathology.
