MTPD to ease traffic in Capital
The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has planned to implement ‘odd/even vehicle rotation system’ in the Valley during the upcoming Saarc SummitNirmala Adhikari
According to police, vehicles having odd number plates with odd registration numbers and vehicles with even numbers would be allowed on alternate days.
The MTPD has forwarded the proposal to the government for approval. “The government is likely to respond by Friday,” said Basant Pant, spokesperson at the MTPD.
As various high-level officials and dignitaries would be visiting the country during the summit, maintaining smooth traffic movement in the Capital has been considered top priority. “Operating the system would control the flow of vehicles and ease traffic during Saarc,” said Pant.
MTPD officials say their preparations for the summit are in final stages. The authorities have done their homework to ensure smooth movement of VVIPs and public transportation simultaneously. “During the movement of dignitaries, vehicles will be allowed to use alternative routes to ease traffic congestion,” said Pant.
An additional 132 traffic personnel have been brought from outside the Valley for the Summit.
According to Pant, the additional personnel would be provided training and orientation to maintain smooth vehicular movement during the summit. “The orientation will focus on familiarising them with the Valley’s traffic system and ways to ease traffic flow,” he said.
The traffic police personnel to be deployed at the airport, Durbar Marg, and Thamel among others have also been undergoing 15-day English speaking classes to effectively communicate with guests.
