Nast will distribute USD 500,000 as a grant for researchers as a part of the programme.
The 33-month long programme aims to find the causes of climate change and its effect on various sectors.
Nast has developed six large scale and 30 small scale research models to study the effect of climate change and the factors that are closely associated with the subject. The research grant selection committee will review and evaluate the research projects on merit basis.
“Our goal is to initiate better attention and action to reduce the risk of climate change and build resilient communities,” said Sushim Ranjan Baral, a representative of the programme.
Surendra Raj Kafle, vice-chairperson of Nast, said mountainous and Chure region have been widely affected by global warming. “The programme would help formulate a policy to address the concerns raised by climate change,” Kafle said. He added a study will also be carried out on the effects of rising temperature and its possible hazards in our part of the world.
Govinda Raj Pokhrel, vice-chairperson of the National Planning Commission, said agriculture, tourism and hydro sectors, which are the biggest sources of gross domestic product, are greatly influenced by climate change, and pointed out that climate change has become the most exigent problem that needs immediate attention.
