Singh among four making cut for worlds

Teen swimming sensation Gaurika Singh was among the four swimmers selected for the 18th FINA World Swimming Championships slated to be held in Gwangju, South Korea from July 12-28.
Nepal Swimming Association picked up the swimmers according to the FINA points they earned after their performance in the eighth National Games held in Nepalgunj from April 18 to 24. Singh, the youngest Olympian to participate in the world sporting extravaganza at 13 during the 2016 Rio Olympics, had won 12 gold medal in the National Games.
Singh, who resides in London with her family, will be representing the country in women’s 200m freestyle in which she had timed 2:9:19 minutes and earned a total of 624 FINA points. She clean swept all the events she had participated in the Nationals and made six new national records. Sofia Shah, her brother Alexander and Subham Shrestha were the other swimmers picked up for the world meet.
Shah will be competing in the women’s 100m. Her timing of 1:02:59 minutes gave her a total FINA points of 517. Tisha Shakya has been named as a reserve in the women’s 100m. Duana Lama did manage to earn enough qualifying points at 526 following her women’s 400m gold medal triumph but didn’t make the cut as she was too young.
To compete in the World Championships, a swimmer need to be aged 14 years but Duana was 13 years five months and 17 days old when she earned the points. Shrestha has made the cut in the men’s 100m breaststroke in which he earned gold in 1:08:15 minutes. He got a total FINA points of 523. Alexander will compete in the men’s 100m freestyle.
