Absconding man, convicted of caste-based discrimination and kidnapping, arrested

Police on Wednesday arrested a 65-year-old man, who was convicted of caste-based discrimination and kidnapping and had been on the run since September of last year.
Police arrested Sher Bahadur Shrestha of Manthali-6 in Ramechhap, from his own residence.
The Ramechhap District Court had handed over a four-year prison term and ordered compensation to the victim on two separate cases against Shrestha on September 14, 2022.
Shrestha was charged with caste-based discrimination and kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl from a Dalit community whom he had accused of stealing from his house.
As per the chargesheet, the victim was tied to the pole in the courtyard and subjected to physical abuse for 20 hours before the police were called as Shrestha ignored repeated requests from the neighbours and the victim’s family to set her free.
On the kidnapping charge, the court had sentenced Shrestha to serve a 3 years five months and eight days prison term and pay Rs25,000 to the victim while on the charge of caste-based discrimination, Shrestha was handed 11 months and eight days prison term sentence and Rs 75,000 as compensation to the victim.
Shrestha had been absconding ever since the court gave its verdict.
On Thursday, Shrestha was presented before the Ramechhap District Court and has been sent to Ramechhap jail to serve the sentence.
