Koshi police will deploy 8,133 police personnel to maintain security during Dashain and Tihar. The Koshi Province Police Office in Biratnagar has stepped up security across all 14 districts under its Festival Security Plan 2026.
The deployment aims to prevent crime, road accidents and other untoward incidents during the festive period, said Shekhar Khanal, chief of the provincial police office. “The security plan has been introduced to ensure that people can celebrate the festivals in a joyful, harmonious and fear-free environment,” Khanal said.
To improve passenger safety and convenience, police have set up 72 passenger assistance desks at bus parks, bus stands and along major and secondary highways across the province’s 14 districts. The desks will address travel-related problems, receive complaints and help protect passengers from fraud and other forms of exploitation, police said.
Police teams accompanied by trained sniffer dogs have been deployed at major border crossings and suspicious locations to prevent firecrackers and other explosive materials from being smuggled into the country. Inspections have been tightened in these areas.
Surveillance has also been stepped up in crowded public places, intersections and markets using closed-circuit television cameras. Drones will be used where necessary, the provincial police office said.
As part of the plan, 453 personnel have been assigned to quick response teams for rapid deployment and rescue operations. Fifteen striking teams have also been mobilised to maintain law and order in sensitive and high-risk areas.
Joint traffic checks have been arranged at 179 locations to reduce road accidents, enforce traffic rules and prevent drink-driving. Police will also conduct checks and surveillance at 83 locations along the border to curb theft, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
The deployment includes 98 mobile patrol units, 22 highway escort teams, 215 foot patrols and 503 teams assigned to picket duty. Police have also been stationed at 50 religious and tourist sites and at 34 locations housing important institutions and government offices.
