Nepal Student Union, the student wing of Nepali Congress, shut down schools and colleges in Kavre district on Sunday, demanding release of its leader Krishna Dhakal.
Krishna, the NSU unit chairman of Tapeshwor Secondary School, was recently arrested for posting a distorted photo of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Facebook.
Krishna was arrested after he had deleted the image from his Facebook wall and apologised for the post.
In protest of Krishna’s arrest, the NSU had announced an educational strike in Kavre on Sunday and Monday.
The Nepali Congress’s student body has warned of intensifying its protest if Krishna is not freed immediately.
Picketing the Kavre District Administration Office, enforcing a transport strike at the district headquarters and burning Prime Minister Oli in effigy are some of the protests lined up by the NSU.
Meanwhile, Kavre police have arrested journalist Kabiraj Dhakal for sharing the same photo posted by Krishna in a group chat.
