Congress leader hints at some delay in party convention date
Shekhar Koirala says March 5 parliamentary polls may not be feasible.Post Report
Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has indicated that the party’s 15th convention, proposed for January 10-12, might be slightly deferred.
Speaking at a function in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Koirala mentioned that the delay in distributing active membership of the party might cause some delay in the general convention. "The convention may be delayed," he said, "I am not trying to delay it, I am the person who believes it should be held on the stipulated time.”
The distribution and renewal of active membership in the Nepali Congress has not been completed on time. The party’s active membership management committee meeting held on Tuesday decided to extend the renewal deadline until Wednesday afternoon. Previously, the deadline for sending the renewal details was set for December end.
There was a delay in the distribution of active memberships due to the absence of serial numbers on some of the application forms sent by the central office, according to leaders. After this issue arose, the distribution process was delayed. The general convention of the Congress will take place after the convention of the village and municipal committees, followed by the district and provincial committees.
On the occasion, Koirala mentioned that there is widespread interest in the Congress convention but clarified that a general convention is not something new. He said that the convention is part of a regular process that happens every four years, and the media does not need to pay excessive attention to it.
Koirala is one the aspirants for the party president and already announced that he will contest the top post in the upcoming convention.
“Everyone keeps asking about the Nepali Congress convention,” said Koirala, adding, “Honestly, it sometimes gets annoying to me.”
“It will happen in its own time, so why worry?" he said. "Now, if journalists write that Shekhar Koirala's group is trying to postpone the convention, that’s not true. I’m not trying to delay it."
He further stated, "I don't understand why everyone is worried about the Congress convention. A party convention is a regular event, and it happens every four years. It continues as it should."
Regarding the snap parliamentary elections, Koirala stated that even though the government has set the election date as March 5, he believes the elections will not be possible on that date. He mentioned that there is no sign of an election atmosphere anywhere.
