Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane has said that the country must head to elections, insisting there is “no alternative” under the present circumstances.
Addressing party leaders and cadres at the RSP office in Banasthali on Sunday, ahead of formally resuming his duties as party chief, Lamichhane said addressing the demands raised by the Gen Z uprising has become unavoidable. This is the RSP chief's first address at the party headquarters after he was released on bail by the High Court Tulsipur on Friday on cooperatives fraud charges.
He said the RSP stands with the government on three agendas—maintaining good governance, addressing Gen Z demands, and holding elections.
“The sacrifices of the youths who lost their lives during the Gen Z revolt cannot be forgotten,” he said, warning that some forces were working to derail the electoral process. “There is no need for such efforts—win the party election and win the general election as well.”
Lamichhane called for unity among alternative political forces that emerged after the September uprising.
Separately, speaking about recent moves by the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, who have moved the Supreme Court seeking reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives, Lamichhane dismissed restoration as meaningless.
He argued that there is no point in restoring the House where the “microphone is turned off when lawmakers try to voice issues of public concern”.
“What parliament do you want restored?” he asked, recalling how lawmakers, while trying to raise issues of public concern, used to be silenced. He argued that the previous government led by KP Sharma Oli must bear the responsibility for the excessive force used during the Gen Z protests.
“Those in government structures, ministers, prime ministers, and those who supported them through high-level mechanisms all carry the stains of innocent blood,” he said.
