The Koshi provincial government has announced relief for victims of the violence in Dewanganj, Sunsari, pledging Rs200,000 for the family of each person killed and Rs50,000 for those injured and families whose homes or shops were damaged in arson attacks.

The announcement was made on Wednesday after an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki to discuss the aftermath of the Sunday violence in Dewanganj.

The meeting adopted an eight-point resolution aimed at restoring social harmony, maintaining peace and strengthening security.

Under the agreement, political parties, civil society organisations and the local administration will work together to promote mutual brotherhood and social harmony. The provincial government also decided to organise all-party and multi-stakeholder meetings at the local level to encourage dialogue and reconciliation.

The resolution also calls for goodwill marches, public appeals, and other outreach programmes to be conducted in coordination with local authorities to foster trust and harmony within affected communities.

Participants also called on security agencies to remain vigilant against any undesirable activities that could originate from border areas. The federal government was requested to ensure proper treatment for the injured and provide relief to the families of those killed.

The meeting further urged closer coordination with district administrations in Sunsari and surrounding districts to strengthen security measures and prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Addressing the meeting, Karki said all stakeholders must act responsibly and exercise restraint to maintain social harmony during the sensitive period.

He urged everyone to refrain from any activities that could undermine social harmony.

The meeting was attended by Chandra Bahadur Rai, provincial chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party; Uddhav Thapa, provincial president of the Nepali Congress; Ghanshyam Khatiwada, provincial chair of the CPN-UML; representatives of other political parties, heads of provincial security agencies and senior government officials.
