Most schools and colleges in Biratnagar remained closed on Tuesday due to security concerns following the incident in Kaptanganj of Sunsari’s Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3.

Educational institutions suspended classes amid concerns over possible security risks and disruptions to school bus operations.

A resident was killed after security forces opened fire while trying to control a clash between two groups in Kaptanganj on Sunday night. Nine others were injured in the incident. Protests were also held in Biratnagar on Monday following the violence.

Although the Education Division of Biratnagar Metropolitan City did not issue an official decision to close schools, educational institutions suspended classes on their own, citing the security situation and the possible risk of transport disruptions.

According to Ram Prasad Dhungel, chief of the metropolitan city’s Education Division, many schools decided not to operate classes after receiving information that school bus services could face difficulties.

“The metropolitan city has not officially announced a school holiday. However, most schools and colleges did not open from early morning. Schools suspended classes after it appeared that school bus operations could be disrupted,” Dhungel said.

Meanwhile, fear continues among residents in southern Sunsari following the Kaptanganj incident. Dewanganj and Harinagar rural municipalities have announced public holidays in mourning over the death.

Educational institutions in those areas also remained closed on Tuesday in view of the protests and the prevailing security situation.

Meanwhile, local authorities have further tightened security arrangements in the affected areas to prevent any possible untoward incidents.
