Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar on Saturday to assess the current security situation and discuss necessary measures.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rameshwar Dangal, and chiefs of all four security agencies–Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department–attended the meeting, which lasted for nearly two hours.
According to the prime minister’s secretariat, the security chiefs presented their assessments of the situation and discussed possible security challenges.
Home Minister Aryal said that the government had conducted a detailed review of the security situation. “We are aware that some groups are preparing to hold demonstrations. Everyone is free to express their political demands responsibly,” the prime minister’s secretariat in a press note quoted Aryal as saying after the meeting.
He added that the government is open to dialogue with concerned parties to address political issues and urged all sides to act responsibly, given the current circumstances.
The meeting has been held at a time when different groups are reportedly preparing to hold demonstrations and major political forces have accused the government of failing to maintain law and order in the aftermath of the September unrest.
Leaders from the political parties have also claimed that the Karki administration can’t hold March elections if it doesn’t change its current approach of what they describe as an intention to sideline the traditional political forces.
