Nepal will receive a $29 million investment to expand broadband and data infrastructure.
The initiative brings together the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited (SCBNL), WorldLink Communications Ltd., and its subsidiary Data World Ltd., with backing from the International Development Association’s Private Sector Window.
The investment will help grow Nepal’s fibre optic networks and establish modern, environmentally sustainable data centres. This includes the country’s first EDGE-certified facility, targeting improved connectivity in underserved areas and supporting rising demand for data storage and processing, the organisations said in a joint statement.
“This strategic partnership will significantly strengthen connectivity across Nepal,” said Dileep Agrawal, founder and chairman of WorldLink Communications. “It marks a shared commitment to a digitally empowered society.”
The project aligns with the government’s 16th National Plan and the Digital Nepal Framework, aiming to deliver universal internet access and integrated infrastructure development. IFC’s Regional Director for South Asia Imad N. Fakhoury said the project would support job creation and enhance digital access, especially in rural areas.
The initiative also promotes gender inclusion in the workforce and aims to improve broadband access using resilient fibre-to-the-home technology.
IFC’s Director for Infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific Vikram Kumar said that data infrastructure is key to unlocking economic benefits from digital services.
Gorakh Rana, SCBNL CEO and head of Coverage, Nepal, said the project would strengthen Nepal’s digital foundation and unlock global opportunities.
