Police allege that the lawmaker played an active role in the criminal activities during the demonstration.
Post Report
The Kathmandu District Police informed Speaker Devraj Ghimire that Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Dhawal Shumsher Rana has been arrested on criminal charges for his alleged involvement in arson, vandalism, and looting during violent protests led by pro-monarchy groups in Kathmandu on Friday.
Rana was arrested after the royalist protests on Friday evening, which escalated into violent clashes, causing significant property damage and resulting in fatalities. Police allege that the lawmaker played an active role in the criminal activities during the demonstration. A formal letter regarding his arrest was sent to Speaker Ghimire, confirming the details of the arrest.
Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Parliament Secretariat, confirmed that the Speaker received the letter from the police. “The police have informed the Speaker about the arrest, and the letter has been received as per constitutional provisions,” Giri said.
As per Article 103(6) of the Constitution, when an MP is arrested on criminal charges, the arresting authority is required to inform the Speaker immediately. The Constitution also states that no MP can be arrested during a parliamentary session unless it is for a criminal charge under federal law.
