Ophthalmologist Dr Sanduk Ruit was awarded the prestigious ISA Award for Service to Humanity amid a programme held at the ISA Cultural Centre in Manama, Bahrain on Tuesday.
The king of Bahrain, His Majesty Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa handed Ruit $1 million (Rs131 million) during the royal ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, King Khalifa welcomed all the ministers of the Kingdom of Bahrain, delegates and journalists from countries including Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan among others.
“We are happy to celebrate the exemplary humanitarian work done by Sanduk Ruit with you all,” he said.
Dr Ruit, with simple and low-cost methods, has worked to prevent blindness in people from Nepal and many other countries. He was announced as the recipient of the prestigious award last month.
Upon receiving the award, Dr Ruit thanked the Kingdom of Bahrain and the king as well as all the people who helped him in his journey so far.
“I accept this prestigious award on behalf of millions of patients, their families, my team and the entire Nepali people whose goodwill and best wishes I bring to this distinguished gathering,” said Ruit.
