Lawyers scuffle with police in front of Supreme Court
Some including Nepal Bar Association General Secretary Lilamani Poudel injured.Post Report
Lawyers who have been demanding Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana’s resignation clashed with police on Thursday as security personnel stopped them from holding a protest on the Supreme Court premises.
Some lawyers, including Nepal Bar Association General Secretary Lilamani Poudel, sustained minor injuries during the scuffle.
“Some lawyers including Poudel were hurt in the scuffle,” said advocate Chandra Guragain who was at the Supreme Court.
The Nepal Bar Association, the umbrella organisation of the lawyers across the country, and Supreme Court justices have been demanding Rana’s resignation for the past two weeks. Rana, however, has refused to budge. He has rather gone on the offensive, assigning cases to justices.
Lawyers so far had been organising protest programmes on the premises of the Nepal Bar Association. But on Thursday, they planned their protest on the Supreme Court premises leading to a scuffle with police.
