Twenty-year-old Rima Chhetri, a BBS first year student at Siddhartha Bahumukhi Campus in Fedikhola VDC of Syanjga district, committed suicide on Thursday. She was found dead hanging by a shawl in her room this morning.
Chhetri had filed her candidacy for presidency in Free Student Union election from Nepali Congress affiliated Nepal Students’ Union (NSU). It has been suspected that Chhetri killed herself after she lost in the election.
According to District Police Chief SP Dev Bahadur Bogati, a suicide note recovered from the death scene reads ‘dying is not a choice but compulsion’.
The college sources informed that Chhetri had secured only 28 votes in the election held on Wednesday. Chhetri, who had acknowledged her defeat after the poll results were announced at 10 am yesterday, had taken part in victory rally of NSU at Tribhuvan Adarsha Multiple Campus in district headquarters, said NSU district President Ajit Chhetri.
“With NSU remaining victorious at Tribhuvan Campus, we organised a victory rally followed by a dinner programme. She took the meal and headed for home,” said Ajit Chhetri.
The next morning, Chhetri made an excuse to stay at home. She hanged herself with a shawl after realising that there was no one at the home, Ajit Chhetri said.
“It is not clearly known the exact reason for her suicide. We don’t think the reason is the defeat in the election because Rima had come to district headquarters for the party promotion after facing her defeat in Fedikhola,” said Ajit Chhetri.
Ajit shared that Rima could have committed suicide due to some personal reasons relating to her prestige. However, her parents refused to comment on the issue.
Her dead body has been brought to district hospital for post-mortem, it is learnt.
