Floods swamp dozens of settlements

Heavy rains since Tuesday night in many places, particularly in the eastern and central regions of the country, caused the water levels to rise in most rivers. Several incidents of floods were reported in these regions.
Floods triggered by torrential rainfall in rivers and streams inundated dozens of places in Jhapa district.
Several homes were waterlogged in places like Bhadrapur, Tulsibari, Chapramari, Gherabari, Chakchaki, Rajgadh and Panchganchi.
Nepal Red Cross Society, Jhapa, said as many as 100 people were affected by floods across the district.Rain-swollen rivers and streams spilled over their banks and flooded a large area of land and settlements.
In some places, floodwaters covered the motorways and streets. Transport service and public movement were affected throughout the day.
The water level in Narayani River in the central region rose beyond the danger level, causing floods in many parts of Nawalparasi district. At least a dozen villages are at high risk of flood, officials said.
Member of the Parliament Devkaran Prasad Jaiswal said construction of an embankment in Gandak River by India has increased flood risk in many villages situated near Nepal-India border.
Around 7,500 families from 13 villages are vulnerable, he added.
The local administration, meanwhile, issued a flood alerts for the people living close to rivers. It has asked the concerned people to find safe locations in case of floods.
In Pyuthan, a landslide swept away a house in Kabad village on Wednesday.
Police said the landslide was caused after water level increased in Lang River, eroding its bank.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said there is a chance of heavy rains in some places of eastern, central and western regions of the country on Thursday as well.
On Tuesday night, the department had issued a flood alerts for Tarai, Chure and some places in mid-hills, and urged the people living close to rivers and streams to expect rise in water levels and possible events of flood.
