Relief materials reach victims in Far West
The government has prioritised the distribution of tent and food items as immediate relief for more than 115,000 victims displaced by the recent floods and landslides in the Far West.Motilal Poudel
While Surkhet has been the hardest hit in terms of human casualties, relief distribution is concentrated on Bardiya where the number of displaced is comparatively higher, informed Acting Regional Administrator Bijaya Kumar Mallik.
According to him, the World Food Programme (WFP) has taken the responsibility to distribute food for 10 days to the victims in Bardiya. Having distributed food items to 52,000 out of the total of 80,860 displaced by the calamities, the WFP has requested the Home Ministry to make necessary arrangements to provide food items for the remaining victims.
As it would be hard to acquire food items immediately, said explained, the ministry is planning to provide monetary relief to the victims for the time being. “It would come up with projects to rehabilitate them in accordance to their needs.”
The WFP has also provided food items to last for 10 ten days to 26,500 victims in Banke, 3,500 in Surkhet, and 2,000 victims in Dang. The RAO said it had distributed food and other relief materials to 14,425 households in Bardiya, and 919 fully affected and 808 partially affected households in Surkhet.
Similarly, it has distributed relief materials to 6,334 displaced in Banke; 513 in Dang; 108 in Salyan; 100 in Jajarkot; 97 in Rukum. Besides the government, contributions have also been made by various national and international organisations, individuals, the office said.
