The emergency ward of the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital in Birgunj was shut down on Friday night to protest alleged manhandling of a doctor by relatives of a woman who died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Tetari Devi, 67, of Sripur in Birgunj, who was taken to the hospital at around 9pm on Friday night after she suffered a heart attack, died after Dr Prawesh Jaisawal injected her, deceased's relatives claimed. Doctors said Tetari's relatives manhandled Jaisawal over the death.
They said they would not withdraw their protest until they are given written commitment to take action against the guilty and guarantee their security.
Five people involved in manhandling the doctor, who were arrested in connection with the incident earlier, were released on a condition that they would report to police on Sunday. They were released after an agreement between doctors, the deceased's relatives, local political leaders and police was reached on Saturday morning.
Police said they will file a case against the accused after re-arresting them on Sunday.
