Child marriage high in Dalit community in Kalikot
The Dalit community accounts for 59 per cent of the child marriages in Kalikot district, reveals a survey.Ekantipur Report
The survey also shows that child marriage is on the rise in the recent days in the district.
The survey was carried out recently by a local NGO, KIRDAC Nepal, working in the sector of children.
According to the survey conducted in the nine eastern VDCs of the district, 119 out of 483 incidents of marriage were child marriages.
The organisation had carried out a survey at nine VDCs including Manma, Danha, Pankha, Chhapre and Jubitha.
Child Officer of the Organisation, Bale BK, claimed that incidences of child marriage have decreased by 33 per cent compared to the results of a survey carried out in 2010. It was 58.69 per cent in 2010.
The survey shows that only 25.60 per cent incidences of child marriage took place in the areas. Most child marriages take place in the Dalit community due to the lack of awareness and education.
It was found that child marriages take place in the rural areas in the district due to pressure from parents and lack of education.
Fifty-nine per cent of the child marriages takes place in the Dalit community, 15 per cent in the Brahman community, 22 per cent in the Chhetri community and four per cent in other communities, states the survey.
Similarly, District Child Welfare Officer, Moti Neupane, said that 63 per cent of the total incidences of child marriages involved girls and 37 per cent boys.
