NC leaders come down on party brass
The Nepali Congress leadership continues to face heavy criticism from Central Working Committee (CWC) members for its failure on multiple fronts. The Nepali Congress leadership continues to face heavy criticism from Central Working Committee (CWC) members for its failure on multiple fronts. The party brass was pointedly told to do a serious introspection.
Almost all the CWC members who spoke in Monday’s meeting criticised the role of the top leaders after the promulgation of the new constitution. Defending the decision to file NC’s candidacy in the PM election, President Sushil Koirala said he had in fact wanted Ram Chandra Poudel to run for the party. “But Deubaji did not agree,” Koirala said, referring to senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, who refuted the charge immediately. “You never told me you favoured Poudel as the PM candidate. I’ll never meet you alone now,” an angered Deuba replied to Koirala.
Poudel rued that the party’s humiliation came largely because both the leaders wanted to stop him. Seventeen CWC members including Purna Bahadur Khadka, Ram Sharan Mahat, Sujata Koirala, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Dhan Raj Gurung and Gagan Thapa spoke on Monday.
Former Joint Secretary General Purna Bahadur Khadka said President Koirala, senior leader Deuba and Vice-president Poudel should take moral responsibility for their collective failure. Former Finance Minister Mahat said the trio should be responsible for the NC’s diminished role in national politics.
“If the party wanted to have its own candidate, it should have been done on its own and without taking cue from any foreign power,” said Mahat. Sujata Koirala asked the top leaders to leave active politics and pave the way for other leaders.
