Dr KC meets PM Koirala, urges him to implement 11-point pact

Senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Dr Govinda KC, drew the attention of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to implement the agreements reached with him earlier.
He met PM Koirala at his official residence in Baluwatar on Monday and reminded the prime minister of the 11-point pact reached with him on September 5. In the agreement, the government had agreed to form Health Profession Education Commission chaired by Prime Minister and stop affiliation of medical colleges until a new human resource policy is formulated, among others.
"We could not implement the agreement because of the current crisis in the country and the process for forming a new government," said Dr KC quoting PM Koirala.
Dr KC said he urged PM Koirala to play a proactive role in implementing the decisions that will apparently help in building a better healthcare system and medical education.
Dr KC had staged indefinite hunger strike for seven times demanding reforms in medical education sector of the country and end of political meddling in educational institutions. The 11-point agreement that Dr KC has been referring to includes formation of an overarching body that would regulate medical education and also help in imparting quality education.
Though some of the demands such as setting a ceiling on medical education fee and promoting government medical colleges have already been addressed, Dr KC said the political sharing in the Commission will eventually pull down the entire progress made in the sector.
Recently the government had formed the Commission but it was immediately rendered dysfunctional primarily for reasons: appointment of Education Minister as the Chairperson of the Commission and resignation of Dr JP Agrawal from the post of commission vice-chairperson.
