Expressing serious reservations over the 16-point political and constitutional agreement, the six-state federal model and other provisions of the draft constitution, the Sadbhawana Party on Tuesday announced its decision to quit the Constituent Assembly.

"As per the decision of its Central Working Committee, the party has concluded that the CA has become irrelevant. We have decided to resign en masse," said a statement undersigned by Chairman Rajendra Mahato and Parliament Party leader Laxman Lal Karna.

The party accused the major parties of trying to promulgate a constitution that denies the Madhesi people and other communities their rights, on the backing of their numerical strength in the Assembly.

Chairman Mahato, organising a press meet in the Capital on Tuesday evening, said lawmakers from the party had decided to resign en masse arguing that their presence in the CA had no meaning anymore.

Lawmakers Laxman Lal Karna, Sanjay Sah, Nar Singh Chaudhary, Madhawi Rani Sah and Shai Devi Mahato were elected to the second CA on SP tickets.

“The ways federalism was defined in the constitution draft and the states were demarcated will definitely invite conflict while the conspiracy is to do away with federalism altogether,” the party stated.

The proposed provisions on citizenship will make hundreds of thousands Tharus stateless. Also, in the name of naturalised citizenship, attempts are being made to deny the Madhesis and Tharus constitutional and political rights.

“This Assembly will not serve the interests of the deprived, backward and marginalised communities,” the party charged.

Expressing solidarity with the protests being staged in several parts of the country including the Tharu strongholds, the party demanded immediate halt to police "atrocities".

The party also called for rewriting the constitution draft to ensure the rights of the marginalised, backward and minority communities.
