According to party leaders, there are slim chances of holding conventions of sister organisations before the general convention due to the factional feud between party President Sushil Koirala and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba camps.  

Nepal Student Union (NSU), Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Women Sangh, Nepal Kishan Sangh, Nepal Prajtantra Senani Sangh, Nepal Magar Sangh and Nepal Adhibasi Janajati Sangh are yet to hold their conventions to elect a new leadership. All the conventions are running on ad hoc basis, having adverse effect on their activities.

 “It has obviously hampered the democratic process of our sister organisations which is not good for the party,” said Central Working Committee member Nabindra Raj Joshi, who looks after party’s sister organisations.

According to him, the conventions of all sister organisations should be completed by mid-May, and chances remain slim on the possibility.  

 The NSU, Tarun and Woman wings, in the past, had their dates fixed for the convention but due to disputes between the two factions the conventions were cancelled at the eleventh hour. The NSU convention has been disputed for a couple of years. The party had entrusted general secretaries Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Sitaula for holding the convention of NSU. Nepal Student Union has not held its convention for a decade.

Nepal Tarun Dal shares the same fate. Despite repeated attempts, it has failed to hold the central convention though district level conventions have been accomplished. The party formed an ad hoc committee of Nepal Women Association three years ago but it has also failed to hold its convention.

Leaders from Deuba faction accuse the establishment faction for delaying the conventions of sister organisations with a fear of losing their grip. They say since a leader from their faction was elected in the Dalit Association and Trade Union, the establishment faction was not confident enough to hold the other conventions.

Party leaders admit that the leadership’s tendency to pick heads of sister conventions instead of holding elections has hampered the chances of holding conventions of sister organisations.

As the general convention approaches, disputes among the two factions have heightened. Active membership distribution remains unsettled.

Fourteen districts are yet to submit active membership forms to headquarters. Differences persist in creating additional posts in the party’s current seven-member office bearer.

The Koirala faction is said to be preparing to create new posts in order to adjust leaders close to him, however Deuba faction is against the idea.
