According to the latest traffic police data, the number of critical road injuries has come down by 60 percent and fatalities by 6 percent.
In the face of initial skepticism, the campaign—commonly referred to as Ma Pa Se—turned out to be one of the most effective operations by traffic police. The zero-tolerance regulation as resulted in a drop in the number of injuries in road accidents from 6,886 to 6,525 in two years since the introduction of the regulation.
Anyone found violating the anti drunk-driving rule will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and attend a mandatory hour-long class held by traffic police on the dangers of driving under the influence. Besides, their driving licences are hole punched for each offence, with five such holes rendering the licence redundant. The MTPD data suggests 89,023 instances of hole punchings and 99 licences revoked. Traffic police have penalised 166,599 people under the Ma Pa Se, collecting Rs 153.63 million in fines from drunk drivers.
