33-party alliance falls apart
The 33-parties alliance that boycotted the second Constituent Assembly election has ‘crumbled’ hardly two years after its formation.
The alliance came to prominence with its demand for dissolution of the erstwhile Khil Raj Regmi government to promulgate constitution through an all-party roundtable outside the CA. The alliance later resorted to violence to disrupt the CA election despite national and international pressure.
Mani Thapa of CPN-Revolutionary, a key member of the alliance, in a brief statement said the bloc had been dissolved without giving details. It has not held any meeting or joint programme for some time, he said. “The alliance has been unofficially defunct since the past few months. The recent split in the CPN-Maoist has ended any hope of its revival.”
Pasang Sherpa, Vice-chairman of the Social Democratic Party, said the alliance is no longer functional but said it could be revived if they get strong agenda and leadership again. Many members of the alliance, including Sherpa, have switched to the 19-party alliance under UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
The alliance was constituted of self-styled nationalist parties, including Limbuwan party, CPN (United Marxist), CPN (Maoist), among others.
