Ahead of the formation of the Sushil Koirala-led government in February, the two parties inked a seven-point deal on running the coalition and re-endorsing the President and the Vice President.

After the UML elected its new leadership from its ninth general convention, Chairman KP Oli has been pressing the NC to implement the pact.

A meeting of leaders from the two parties held at prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Sunday evening decided to form the panel.

The four-member task force will prepare for the nomination of 26 lawmakers from various parties, do homework on appointments to several constitutional bodies and finalise candidates for 16 ambassadorial positions from career and political backgrounds, said an NC leader.

The mandate and terms of the panel will be decided on Monday. It will look into the controversy surrounding the implementation of the seven-point agreement and filling the key vacancies. Ahead of the PM’s visit to New York on September 19, the agenda will be addressed, said leaders from both sides.

The task force members will be announced on Monday, paving the way for soliciting names for the Constituent Assembly nominations from the NC, the UML, the UCPN (Maoist), the RRP-Nepal and fringe parties.

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is keen to talk to CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya before nominating the lawmakers, sources said. Koirala telephoned the hard-line leader on Sunday, inviting him over for a meeting but Baidya was outside the Capital.

Koirala is said to be of the opinion that the agitating Maoist party could be inducted in the CA by giving some of the 26 seats in order to ease the constitution writing process.
