The students of Bijaya Samudayik Shikshaa Sadan in Gaindakot, Nawalpur, have built a Chautari (rest spot) on the school premises using collected waste.

The students used more than 250 plastic bottles and 20 bags of plastic waste to build the Chautari.

“We put the plastic waste inside the bottles and used those bottles as construction material,” said Rekha Shrestha, assistant headmaster of the school.

One of the students, Kabita Bhusal, said that recycling waste is a habit that must be adopted into one’s daily life.

“We experimented on how we can keep the environment clean and utilise the waste properly. Burning plastic or dumping it in forests pollute the environment, so we came up with this idea to make good use of the waste,” Bhusal said.

According to her, the students collected waste in a span of five to six months, and they learnt to recycle the waste.

“This is just the beginning, we intend to continue doing this. We will experiment more ways to recycle waste and turn it into something incredible,” she said.

Nawalparasi (East) does not have a landfill site. As a result, garbage is strewn all over the bazaar area. The concerned authorities have so far not taken any concrete steps towards waste management.
