“Nepali arts has an illustrious past of more than 2000 years and throughout we have been able to establish our own unique tradition,” said Shakya. “Our art is original and has contributed to the economy of the country since the medieval times.”
“But despite its contribution to the state, it has not gotten the attention it deserves from the state,” Shakya added, “if the state was a little more attentive towards the development of arts and craft, we could go a long way.”
Sculptor Shakya’s work has been exhibited in various countries around the world including two editions of the World Expo, where he displayed his rendition of the Swet Bhairav. He is especially noted for constructing a 125-ft tall statue of Padmasambhav in Bhutan.
Shakya further mentioned that he hopes to take Nepali sculptures to the level it was during Lichhavi and Malla era. The session with Shakya was moderated by secretary of Sofaj Devendra Thumkeli.
