The Sultan in full swing
Anil Shahi, also known as the Nepali Sultan of Strings, is a fusion guitarist and music director.
What is keeping you busy these days?
These days, I’ve been spending quite a lot of time in the studio, composing music for different singers. Besides that, I’ve been performing during programmes organised by embassies of different countries. I also tour occasionally, mostly in the UK and in the US.
Who do you look up to as a source of inspiration?
My grandfather used to play the tabala and my uncle played the guitar. Also, I used to see guys in my neighbourhood playing the guitar. I started practicing on my uncle’s guitar and, here I am now. All these people and memories have inspired me a lot.
What do you like to do when you have time for yourself?
Generally, I watch performances by top musicians from over the world—whom I admire—on the Internet.
I also love to swim during warm summer days. The pleasure you get out of diving into the cold water to escape the heat is unparalleled.
Do you like to watch films? If so, which genre do you prefer?
I have this compulsive habit. Once I start watching films, I can’t stop and watch several in one go. But when work takes over, I completely forget about them, and don’t miss them at all.
I prefer watching Hollywood action movies.
Are you a foodie? What is your favourite food?
Oh yes. I love food. My favourite is Thai red hot curry. I eat it all the time.
Your work must have taken you to a lot of places. Do you enjoy travelling?
Yes, definitely. Of all the places I’ve travelled to so far, I love San Francisco, the most. I was there for a show at Napa Valley and had the opportunity to go around the area. I was so captivated and inspired by the city that I wrote a song about it. It’s titled Addicted to San Francisco.
Are you tech savvy? Do you obsess over your gadgets?
Yes, I am. I keep myself updated on new gadgets that are launched in the market. I own a few and like to keep the updated ones. I’m very much dependent on my mobile phone as it is my access to information from around the world.
Do you like reading?
Yes. I love reading about history, for it has always fascinated me. Myanmarko Janajiwan is one book that I like a lot. It is a story about the Nepali diaspora in Myanmar and their lives. It is a stirring read.
What is your worst nightmare?
The thought of being exposed to a large body of flowing water in the dark scares me.
Is there anything you’d want to change about yourself?
My management skills are very poor, so I’d like to improve on that. Also, I’m very forgetful, which often puts me through a lot of problems.
If not a musician, what would you be doing?
I think I play football quite well, so I’d definitely have become a football player if not a musician. When I was young, I had to choose between football and music and I chose the latter.
A word of advice for upcoming artists?
A balance between discipline, hard work and creativity will lead you to the path of success.
