Annual Trans Pride Parade to be held tomorrow
Organised for the first time last year, the parade is held to commemorate the coining of the term paralaingik to refer to transgender people.Post Report
Since 2020, Queer Youth Group (QYC), a youth-led queer organisation, in collaboration with Trans Right Collective (TRC), a group of trans activists, has been organising Trans Pride Parade in Kathmandu’s Maitighar Mandala.
On December 17, 2018, a group of trans activists had coined the term paralaingik, a Nepali word to refer to transgender people. Before that, in common parlance, the term tesrolingi (third sex) was used for trans people, which many of them had protested as the forced imposition often led to constant misgendering.
“Since the coining of the term paralaingik, we–trans men and trans women—have been able to create discourses and lobby to be recognised legally as men and women, respectively. Hence to mark this important milestone, we have been celebrating the Trans Pride Parade every year since last year,” said the organisers. “We organise the parade on the first Saturday that comes after December 17. That’s why this year we are celebrating it on December 18.”
According to the organisers, the parade will be held from 1 to 2:30 pm and will witness the participation of trans activists as well as allies.
