Squatters in Gairigaun, Tinkune on Friday took to the streets against attempts by the Kathmandu metropolis to demolish illegal structures.

Tension ran high in the area throughout the day after squatters blocked the traffic by burning tyres. Security was beefed up in the area.

The metropolis had deployed bulldozers to the area.

On March 25, the metropolis office had issued a notice ordering that the structures built illegally by encroaching on public land be removed within a week’s deadline. Through the notice, the metropolis had also warned of charging the cost incurred during the demolition drive from the concerned individuals or organisations if they fail to comply with its instruction.

The Patan High Court on March 31 had issued an interim order against the ultimatum to remove structures built illegally by encroaching on public land.

Here are some pictures of the protest taken by the Post’s photojournalist Keshav Thapa.
