The scenes of Gaijatra celebrations seen in Kathmandu Valley and Hetauda of Makwanpur district on Tuesday. Though Gaijatra is observed to commemorate the deceased loved ones, the festivity is filled with mirth and levity, songs and dances; it is the day to pray for the departed. More recently, the festival has been co-opted by the LGBTI community, who organise pride parades on the day.
