Talks between the government team and representatives of Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging an indefinite hunger strike for the past two weeks, ended inconclusively on Sunday. The meeting will resume on Monday.

Doctors who attended the meeting said they held point-wise discussion on Dr KC’s demands. Except for the ouster of Tribhuvan University Vice-chancellor Tirtha Raj Khaniya and the dean at the TU Institute of Medicine, two of the 10 demands, they have reached a tentative agreement on the eight demands.

The demands include fixing the MBBS fees at Rs3.5 million and stopping affiliations to medical colleges until the Health Profession Education Commission is formed.

The government representatives said Dr KC’s primary demand for reappointment of the IoM dean and the TU VC’s suspension would be discussed with the ministers before Monday’s meeting.

The government talks team is led by Education Secretary Shanta Bahadur Shrestha with Health Secretary Dr     Senendra Raj Upreti as the member while Dr KC’s team is led by Dr YP Singh with Dr Ranjan Sapkota of the Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre and National Resident Doctors Association President Dr Leision Maharjan among the members.

Dr Maharjan said they might reach a conclusion on Monday. Dr KC’s tenth hunger strike entered the 15th day on Sunday.
