Hussain, Singh set swimming national records

Nepali swimmers Nasir Yahya Hussain and Gaurika Singh set new national records at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on Monday.
Hussain, 17, who had set the men's 400m freestyle national record on Sunday, secured a new national record in the men's 200m freestyle. Meanwhile, the 2019 South Asian Games (SAG) four gold medalist Singh created a new national record in women’s 100m backstroke. They both, however, crashed out from the heat rounds.
Hussain clocked 1 minute 57.26 seconds in the men's 200m heats to better his own national record of 1:58.23. He finished 59th overall among 72 participants. The final will be held on Tuesday.
USA’s Luka Hobson secured the best timing of 1:45.69 while England’s Matthew Richards finished behind him clocking 1:45.82. Top 16 players qualified for the final.
Singh clocked 1:06.80 in women’s 100m backstroke, bettering her own national record of 1:07.31 set during 12th South Asian Games. The final of the event will be held on Tuesday.
USA’s Regan Smith qualified for the final with the best timing of 58.47 seconds and Australian Kaylee finished behind her, clocking 58.90 seconds.
Duwana Lama will represent Nepal in women’s 200m freestyle on Tuesday.
