Three Star Club claimed their second title of the season defeating Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) 1-0 in the final of fifth Udaypur Gold Cup football tournament in Gaighat on Saturday.
A lone goal from foreign recruit Ajayi Martins in the 18th minute was sufficient for Three Star to win the final which saw both the sides finish the match with a-man down. Three Star had previously won Mai Valley Gold in Ilam while a record third title in Udaypur.
Unlike Three Star, MMC failed to grab single title in the season despite making to finals of all three major tournaments – Mai Valley, Damak Gold Cup and Udaypur. Three Star were sent packing after first round match in Damak. It was also the seventh defeat in a row for MMC at the hands of Three Star in finals.
The match saw ugly scenes in the 80th minute when MMC defender Bimal Basnet manhandled Three Star forward Martins. The referee gave red cards to both the forwards. MMC’s Dona Thapa was declared the man-of-the-match and won Rs 7,000.
Champions Three Star bagged Rs 500,000 and MMC got Rs 300,000. Three Star dominated other individual awards winning six among seven up for grabs. Prajwal Chaudhary of hosts Udaypur XI was the only exception to get emerging player award.
Three Star’s Peter Segun (best player), Martins (highest scorer), Alan Neupane (goalkeeper), Bijay Dhimal (defender), Rupesh KC (midfielder) and Meghraj KC (coach) won the individual awards. Segun received Rs 50,000 while other individual award winners got Rs 10,000 each.
