Shrestha, Tamang claim Under-16 titles
Syantu Shrestha of Kathmandu and Dikshya Tamang of Adarsha Vidya Mandir (AVM) claimed the U-16 gold medals of the National Open Table Tennis Championships on Thursday.
In the final matches at the National Table Tennis Training Centre in Lainchaur, Shrestha rallied from a set down to overcome Ritiz Joshi of AVM 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8. Ghanshyam Sharma of UCPS and Aashish Sharma of AVM were the joint semi-finalists .
Tamang had an easy ride over his schoolmate Lasatha Maharjan prevailing 11-9, 11-5, 11-4. Sukriti Shrestha of Rupandehi and Anju Suwal of Prabhat were the joint third place finishers. Meanwhile, the semi-finalists in both the men’s and women’s singles have been confirmed on Thursday.
National champion and top seed Deep Saun of Nepal Police Club (NPC) will take on Krishna Thapa of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) in the men’s last four with another Armyman Rajendra Kapali taking on Chandan Shahi of Nepal Armed Police Force Club in another semi-final clash.
Saun beat Nabin Bahadur Singh of Galaxy Public School 12-10, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 and Thapa sidelined clubmate Nihaal Shrestha 11-7, 11-6, 10-12, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6 in the quarter-finals. Likewise, Kapali eased to an 11-7, 11-5, 11-2, 11-8 victory over Jacky Maharjan of Lalitpur with Shahi beating U-16 champions Shrestha 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8.
Elina Maharjan of NPC set the women’s singles last four clash with U-16 champion Tamang after defeating Anita Maharjan of APF 12-10, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6. Tamang ousted Norden Tamang 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7. In another semi-final, Erika Maharjan of NPC will take on Sukriti. Erika laboured past Anima Adhikari of APF 11-6, 11-5, 11-13, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9 and Sukriti defeated another APF player Selisha Khadgi 11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7, 11-3.
