Nepal beat Pak, cruise to semis
Nepal defeated hosts Pakistan 2-0 to advance to the semi-final of the third Saff Women’s Championship held at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad on Friday.
Along with Nepal, Sri Lanka — with two consecutive victories — booked their berth in the final four from Group B. Skipper Anu Lama and midfielder Sajana Rana scored to hand Nepal their second successive win.
Lama scored the opening goal in the 14th minute and Rana doubled the lead in the 24th. Lama and Rana, who had scored two goals each during Nepal’s 8-0 drubbing of Bhutan in first match, take their goal tally to three each in the tournament.
Earlier, Sri Lanka hammered Bhutan 3-0 to take their points tally to six, same as Nepal. Nepal, however, top the group on goal difference. The result of the match between the two teams on Sunday will decide the Group B winners. Pakistan and Bhutan have crashed out of the tournament after two straight losses.
The result meant Nepal maintained their 100 percent winning record against Pakistan in the championship. It was the third time that the two teams had met in the event with Nepal beating them 12-0 in the group stage of the first edition in Bangladesh. In the second edition held in Sr Lanka in 2012, Nepal had hammered Pakistan 8-0.
Maldives take on Afghanistan in the first match on Saturday followed by the India-Bangladesh clash. Both the team have won their first two matches. India had opened their campaign with 8-0 drubbing of minnows Maldives and Bangladesh had trounced Afghanistan 6-1 in Group A match held on Thursday.
